Thank you for taking the opportunity to learn a little more about our family farm. We are conveniently located in Pataskala, just 18 miles East of Columbus in Licking County. Our farm was started by Caren’s late father, Richard Birney, in 1982 with just 1 acre of vegetables to sell to neighbors along with beef cattle and grain. There was such a high demand for fresh produce in central Ohio that the farm kept growing and this soon became Richard’s full time job. He had a passion for growing the freshest, highest quality, and best tasting produce possible. He also believed in keeping prices affordable so that everyone had the opportunity to purchase healthy, great tasting fruits and vegetables. Additionally, Richard took pride in his land and his work and he made it a point to educate customers on how their food was grown and God’s role in it.
Now over 40 years later Birney’s Miracle Farm is still going strong. It is currently owned and operated by Richard’s daughter Caren and her husband, Eric Conkey, along with the help of friends and family. The farm currently consists of around 30 acres of fruits and vegetables, beginning in May with strawberries and most other items running July-October. Produce is available already picked at our open air stand, which is stocked 7 days a week during the season or through our CSA membership program. Additionally, we sell at the Pataskala Farmers Market and the Johnstown Farmers Market June-September.
The other main way to get your hands on our delicious vegetables is to bring your family and get a more hands on experience by venturing out into our 15 acre U-pick to select the vegetables of your choice. Fields of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, dent corn, and cucumbers among others await. Fun for all ages (especially when the hay wagon shuttle is operating) and a great way to stock up on large amounts of fresh produce for a reasonable price. The U-pick is typically open on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from August-October.
A few other places you may see our produce that we are proud to work with include: Mama Linda’s Pizza, The Crazy Cucumber, and the cafeterias of Southwest Licking Local schools. Along with these we have also been the featured tomato vendor at the Reynoldsburg Tomato Festival the last several years.
A lot has changed over the last 40 years but we strive to maintain the ideals that Richard cared so much about. We still do our best to provide the community with access to the freshest, highest quality, and best tasting fruits and vegetables we know how. We also still try to keep our prices affordable for everyone while keeping up with the ever increasing cost of farm inputs. Despite all the challenges farming brings we feel blessed to carry on Richard Birney’s legacy and keep Birney’s Miracle Farm going for many seasons to come.
